March 2017 Newsletter - "The Two Fears" by Pastor Roni Burton
It’s been often said that ‘we have nothing to fear but fear itself’. The question is, “who is speaking?” The first time ‘fear not’ is mentioned in the Word is found in Gen 15:1 when YHVH speaks to Abram through a vision. Often times when God shows up, the first thing He says to us is “fear not”. And then there is what appears to be a contradiction. The fear of the Lord being the beginning of wisdom. Proverbs 15:33 says it this way, “the fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom”.
The apostle Paul to Timothy says in 1 Tim 1:7, “for God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. It appears then that there are two types of fear. There is the “fear of the Lord” and there is “the sprit of fear”.
The spirit of fear separates. In Gen 3:8 we hear the voice of God walking with Adam in the cool of the day; a place of intimacy, revelations, infinite power, no limitations; no spirit of fear. Before the verse ends, we no longer hear the Voice walking but find Adam and Eve hiding from the presence of God because they were naked and afraid.
So there appears to be two fears. The Hebrew word for fear is yare. Among it’s meanings are: morally to revere, to frighten, be afraid, dreadful, (put in) fear; be, had, in (reverence), to see terrible (ness, thing), piety, to inspire reverence or Godly fear… It is also the root for the word Torah. The Torah/the Word/YHVH (John 1:1) speaks words of spirit and life (John 6:63). God/YHVH/Jesus is love (1 John 4:8). There is no fear in love: but perfect love; casts out fear…(1 John 4:18).
So the reverence or fear of the Word is the beginning to the highest virtue; Wisdom. However, if we are separated from the reverent love of the Word then the “other” spirit; void of divine secrets, bankrupt of divine wisdom which is the “NOT” (the void, the no-thing, the foolishness etc.) in the command “fear not”. Without the fear of the Lord the fear of the enemy causes spiritual, genetic defects manifested as worry, stress, disease, the “Ites” and other tangles of satan’s triple braided chord of lust (1 John 2:16).
So, “fear not”. Don’t reverence the spirit of worthlessness.
We have stepped into a season when what we hear and what we see must be what we hear our Father saying and what we see him doing. There are two voices that we can hear. One, the Voice of our Father that spoke and maintains the universe through the Word or our own in varied, satanic disguises. Thus, there are two fears and two voices but only one Truth; the revelation of the divine Mystery. To fear Him is to cast out all darkness. And if we walk in the light as He is in the light (1 John1:7) we have fellowship with the One who is fear-less.
